What Digital Camera Modes and its Types
So far we have read the winning articles, we have seen that when we use different modes in different situations. Because in dark weather we need more light in our photo, while in most we need less light in camera for our photo. And we can do all this work with the help of camera mode.
Being a professional photographer, it is very important for you to have accurate knowledge of all these digital camera modes. Because it becomes very important to control the exposure. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced photographer, you must know the working of each camera mode, and you must have a complete understanding of when to use which mode.
What is Digital Camera Modes ?
With the help of digital camera modes keys the photographer can control the parameter of exposure, these are shutter speed, aperture and ISO. The most popular mode in which the camera automatically controls the camera exposure with the help of machine learning /artificial intelligence algorithms is auto mode. Whereas in the other modes, the photographer himself control according to the light and darkness.
In today’s new era, we see the option of “PSAM” or “PASM” in most of the cameras, with this option we can change / control the modes of the camera. This is an important option of the camera. You can see this in the image. This option is also called “dial” in professional language.
If we go back in time, we did not get to see this option in the old-fashioned cameras. At that time the photographer had to do the settings like shutter speed, aperture and ISO by himself. At that time our cameras were not so advanced. And talking about light, the photographer had to carry a special light metering device to control the light intensity and amount of light. Which used to measure light and also give information about exposure.
In 1938 Kodak introduced the film camera in which the light meter was fitted into the camera itself.
After this, in 1962, a Japanese company named “Topcon” made the first “SLR” camera that measured the light coming through the lens into the camera.
The advantage of this was that the photographer no longer needed to carry light metering equipment. As time passed by, there were new inventions in the camera and a simple photo taking child camera has become a digital camera today. There is nothing wrong if we call today’s camera as an “automatic” camera. Why Automatic / auto mode is present in today’s camera, if we set our camera on this mode, then this mode automatically controls the shutter speed, aperture and ISO of the camera. And it gives perfect exposure to the photo by evaluating the light.
Today, many types of camera modes are available in most cameras, which we use according to the situation. Where most photographers click their images on auto mode, so that the simplicity remains in the photo, more advanced cameras feature modes that allow both automatic and manual exposure control.
Types Of Camera Modes
Now let us talk about how many types of camera modes there are. Given below are the modes of the following cameras.
- Program(P)
- Shutter Priority (Tv) or (S)
- Aperture Priority (Av) or (A)
- Manual(M)
1. Program Camera Mode
In Program mode, your camera automatically chooses the aperture, shutter speed and ISO for you according to the light coming through the lens. This camera mode is most useful when you need to click a quick picture. Or in other words, in “point and shoot” Bali situations, you get a lot of help from this mode. The camera tries to balance between aperture and shutter speed, increasing and decreasing the two based on the intensity of light.
If you are pointing the camera at a very bright place, the aperture will increase i.e. the aperture number will increase (Lowest Aperture), while the shutter speed will also become faster.
In the second case, when your camera is pointed at a dark place, it will result in aperture decrement i.e. the aperture value will decrease (maximum aperture) and the shutter speed will also decrease until the proper exposure for the image.
2. Shutter Priority Mode
Shutter Priority Mode By hearing its name, you must have understood that in this mode we give priority only to the shutter speed, the rest of the settings are handled by the camera itself.
In this mode, we only change the shutter speed, rest of the shutter speed and how much light is passing through the lens, the camera automatically increases and decreases the aperture according to this amount of light. We can use this mode when our intention is to make the motion frozen or intentionally blurred.
If you are pointing at a place where light is very present, you will reduce the shutter speed and the camera will open the aperture to a larger aperture number, allowing less light to pass through the lens.
If the light is dim or not sufficient then the camera reduces the aperture to a lower aperture number so that the aperture opens wider and enough light reaches the sensor. Due to which our photo gets a proper exposure.
this mode either, because there is a risk of getting an overexposed or underexposed image. Why? Because if the amount of ambient light is not sufficient and I set the shutter speed to a really high number, my exposure will be limited to the aperture/speed of my lens.
3. Aperture Priority (Av) or (A)
Aperture Priority Mode By hearing its name, you must have understood that in this mode we can only change the Aperture, the rest of the settings are handled by the camera itself.
If you also say this then you are absolutely right. In aperture priority mode we only adjust the aperture according to the light (which is coming through or coming through the lens). The camera itself changes the shutter speed according to the aperture.
In this mode you have full control over the subject isolation. you can play with the depth of field, because you can increase or decrease the lens aperture and let the camera do the math on measuring the right shutter speed.
When you are shooting in a place where there is a lot of light, the camera will automatically reduce the shutter speed. And on the distance side, when your shooting place is too dark, it makes the shutter speed fast.
In this mode there is no risk of underexposing and overexposing the image as the shutter can go up to 30 seconds and the maximum shutter speed can go up to 1/4000 of a second. which is more than sufficient for most lighting situations.
4. Manual mode(M)
As soon as you hear the name of Manual mode, it should come to your mind that we can change the aperture and shutter speed ourselves. What I mean to say is that we have complete control over them.
In this mode, you are able to manually change the shutter speed and aperture according to the situation and how much light is reaching the sensor through the lens.
When you are shooting at a very bright place, then you have to increase the aperture or increase the aperture number and also increase the shutter speed so that our photo is not clicked overexposed.
On the other hand, when there is a dark place in the situation, then we have to reach more light to the sensor, then in such a situation we have to reduce the aperture number (maximum aperture) and also reduce the shutter speed so that enough light can reach our sensor. So that our photo is not captured underexposed.
